Robert Reid was an artist who painted portraits of modern, young American women. Look closely at the woman in the painting. Do her clothes look modern to you? How about her hairstyle? Her clothes and hair do not look very modern to us, but they were very popular a hundred years ago. Reid’s sitters were often painted outdoors. A sitter is someone who poses for an artist while the artist paints him or her.
