Gallery Guide

Biggs Museum of American Art

Six members of the Peale family are represented in this gallery.  Portraits by Charles Willson Peale, his son Rembrandt, and brother James range in date from 1788 to 1817.  Still life paintings of fruit by James, Rubens, Mary Jane, and Margaretta Angelica Peale show the long lasting tradition of this genre.  Also on view are a sideboard made in Dover by James McDowell in 1810 and examples of Empire furniture from Philadelphia.  The Museum’s decorative arts collection features Delaware and Philadelphia silver and furniture, which are displayed in galleries with paintings from the same locations.
