Alexander Milne Calder designed William Penn as a model for a 37-foot bronze sculpture to top City Hall building of Philadelphia, which John McArthur Jr. (1832–1890) designed. Calder was a student of Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and was also the father of sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder (1870–1945) and grandfather of sculptor and mobile-creator Alexander “Sandy” Calder (1898–1976).
