Tall Clock

Movement: Jonas Alrichs (1759–1802)

Case: Probably John Erwin (1727–1797)

Wilmington, Delaware, 1780–90

Brass works; mahogany, yellow pine

Gift of Sewell C. Biggs; 1992.72

This is one of the most decorative of all Delaware-made tall clocks. It features a brass movement, made by Jonas Alrichs, and the British white-painted clock face, which was first imported into America in the 1780s. The case exhibits Rococo decorations of the previous two decades. These details include a profusion of carved, floral decorations.
