Born in Kentucky and raised in West Virginia, Thomas Anshutz studied art at the National Academy of Design and later at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins (1844–1916). As an instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy and as a realist painter of laborers and a portraitist, Anshutz had a profound influence on five students who would become members of The Eight and the Ashcan School, both famous groups of artists, and included George Luks (1867–1933), John Sloan (1871–1951), Everett Shinn (1876–1953), William Glackens (1870–1938), and Robert Henri (1865–1929).
