Like his predecessor Robert Reid (1862–1929), Herman Dudley Murphy attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris. Both artists were members of the Boston school of impressionism, but unlike Reid, Murphy relied on Japanese aesthetics. Beginning in the 1876 Centennial, the arts of Japan again became extremely popular with American artists.
