Robert Reid began studying painting in 1880 at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in his hometown of Boston, and later studied at the Art Students League in New York City and the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1889, Reid returned to New York and began painting impressionistic portraits of modern young women at the same time he began designing mural studies.
