The Ohio-born John Henry Twachtman studied painting in Munich and New York, but he likely painted Old Orchard during eight months of teaching alongside Frank Duveneck (1848–1919) in Florence, Italy. Many believe that this work exhibits the artist’s early attempt at what eventually became his mature and more-abstract, plein-air style.
