1908

Oil on canvas

Born in Ohio, Edward Henry Potthast trained as an artist in Cincinnati, but he also studied in Antwerp, Munich, and Paris. An American impressionist, Potthast focused on colorful scenes of rural labor. This painting, exhibited in 1908 at the National Academy of Design, demonstrates the artist’s preference for realist subject matter, like this simple depiction of work boats.
