Carl Weber (1855–1921)

1876–1905

Oil on canvas

Gift of Sewell C. Biggs; 1992.49

Carl Weber was born in Philadelphia to German landscape painter Gottlieb Daniel Paul Weber (1823–1916), who would later enroll his son in academic art classes in Germany. There he learned the detailed, almost-scientific approach to depicting nature that this painting exhibits. Weber would become an award-winning artist whose works would be exhibited at the Artist’s Fund Society, the Philadelphia Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the World’s Columbian Exposition, and the American Art Society.
