Transfer-printed earthenware

Sewell C. Biggs bequest; 2004.79-.107

Although manufactured in England, this assembled set of 28 plates, bowls and platters was designed with American landscapes. The printed decoration was taken from William Guy Wall’s Hudson River Portfolio (published between 1820 and 1825) and features scenes that would have appealed to American consumers. The floral decoration bordering the scenes of New York and Pennsylvania are related to the popular Rococo revival style.
