Sauceboat

John David (1736–1798)

Philadelphia, ca. 1770

Silver

Sewell C. Biggs bequest; 2004.215

This sauceboat, a vibrant expression of the popular Rococo style, was originally owned by Delaware’s leading Revolutionary patriot, Caesar Rodney (1720–1784). Although a 1784 inventory of Rodney’s estate lists a fortune’s worth of silver, this is among the few known examples to survive.
