Volunteers Sought for Biggs Museum
Have an interest in the arts, continuing education, and giving back to the Dover community? The Biggs Museum of American Art, located in downtown Dover, accepts volunteers throughout the year. The Museum houses a vast collection of fine and decorative arts from 1700 to the present and features several changing exhibitions per year. The Museum also offers a wide variety of educational school and group tours, engaging children’s programs, fascinating adult lectures, and a variety of exciting social events. The benefits of joining our volunteer program include free admission, discounts on programs, building a knowledge of fine and decorative arts, and the opportunity to meet new individuals with similar interests.
From daily tasks to exhibition openings, volunteers can serve on a weekly, monthly or as-needed basis. All volunteers have the opportunity to assist with multiple operations of the Biggs according to their interest and skill level. Some of these duties include:
- Exhibition installation
- Supporting our marketing endeavors
- Orienting visitors to the museum
- Collection maintenance and cataloguing
- Assisting with school and family programs
- Supporting special event operations
Volunteers interested in becoming docents for the public and school groups will have the opportunity to participate in a training program and engage in an in-depth study our permanent collection. Each docent is asked to create their own tour based on their interests and intended audience. The staff at the Biggs also offers continuing education sessions with our curator and guest artists to help docents brush up on their knowledge of the collection, brainstorm new didactic methods to deliver tours, and learn about upcoming exhibitions.
We also welcome individuals who are interesting in joining any of our planning committees and board.

Volunteer Docent Program
The Biggs Museum of American Art has a dynamic volunteer program that is currently seeking docents. Volunteers interested in becoming docents for public and school tours will have the opportunity to participate in a special training program that explores the Biggs’ Collection in-depth over the course of six weeks with continual specialized training in our feature exhibitions and delivery techniques.
